Case numbers are also on the rise again in Peru. The 7-day incidence is 53.0 new infections per 100,000 population -- up from 19.0 14 days ago. 82.7% of the Peruvian population is fully vaccinated, and 60.6% have had their protection refreshed with the 1st booster vaccination. In Peru, a total of 213,483 persons have died from Covid-19 infection to date. With 6,300 deaths per million population currently, Peru thus unfortunately has the highest mortality rate in the world.

In view of the increasing number of cases, the Peruvian state or the Peruvian Ministry of Health (MINSA) is making efforts in many ways to advance the vaccination process in the country as quickly as possible. This is done practically in different ways:

Many different vaccination campaigns are being conducted nationally, both on a small and large scale. For example, in the city, as in the countryside, vaccination teams go from house to house to vaccinate -just the people at particularly high risk of infection- against the Corona virus, but also influenza, among other things.

Both children 5 to 11 years of age are given their first or second dose of vaccine, and anyone 18 or older, or 40 or older, can receive their third or fourth dose, as long as the prescribed, timed interval from the last dose is completed.

According to Maria Elena Martínez, who heads the immunization department of the Ministry of Health, these campaigns

.

"remind people that the pandemic is not over and that vigilance should not let down, especially during these cold seasons that affect the most vulnerable populations."

Further, vaccination centers, as well as mobile vaccination teams in public places, are also available for vaccination. In addition, for all 12- to 17-year-olds, for example, the required interval between the second and third vaccine doses has been lowered from 5 months to 3 months to improve protection against covid-19 infection for about two and a half million teens nationwide as quickly as possible in light of rising case rates. It appears that MINSA is using all sorts of public events and announcements to inform and promote vaccinations to protect against the Corona virus, as well as recommended preventive measures such as the proper wearing of a mask.

So did, for example, the Minister of MINSA, Jorge Lopez, while informing the population of an imminent spread of influenza in the coming cold season (which is expected to burden the health system additional to the fourth Corona wave):

"I urge people to continue to wear their masks properly, keep their distance and wash their hands, but most importantly, I ask them to complete their vaccination doses against COVID-19 because that is the only way to prevent an increase in hospitalizations."

With an eye on the fourth wave of the virus that is building up, the Ministry of Health says it is upgrading the health care system with better infrastructure, new equipment, properly trained staff, as well as funding. (source 6 & 7)
