Your donations bear fruit: A house for Darío

von Carsten Seeberger19.05.2022

Finally, the time has come! Before Christmas we reported in what a difficult condition our casayohana child Darío was living. But now we have completed his new house so he and his family can live in better conditions. What a bonus in quality of life that seems to be taken for granted here in Germany. We are really incredibly grateful to you that this project could be realized through your numerous donations! You are changing lives! Thank you so much!

This is how Darío lived with his family

.

Would you have guessed? Even in Andahuaylas, temperatures sometimes drop well below zero in the winter. When it also rains, it feels a lot colder. There are many families who live in this cold under undignified and life-threatening circumstances. They live in a one-room plastic shelter. The used material is neither air- nor waterproof, not to mention heat insulation. The soil is sandy and unstable. During the rainy season, there is a danger that the whole slope will slide down, burying the entire "house" and the families underneath. There is no running water or electricity. The water for cooking for daily hygiene and washing clothes, the families have to bring from the contaminated sewer system well above the house laboriously.

In such a dwelling lived Darío with his family. Their fate makes one concerned. Darío's father suffers from severe osteoarthritis, arthritis and gout. His hands are bent and all his joints hurt. The years of work in the mine and the poison used there, as well as the almost unbearable cold, have broken him. Darío's mother is also in pain all over her body. Like her husband, she worked under the worst conditions in poisonous water holes in the mine. Now she is the only one who has regular work and feeds the family as a washerwoman. Darío's older sister lived in the same shelter with her two young children.

It's not just his parents who have health problems: Dario himself is severely developmentally delayed due to oxygen deprivation at birth and has a pronounced learning disability. You can read about the difficult conditions that had to be overcome to give Dario's family a new home in our newsletter from the archive. There you will find the whole story - and see once again what was possible with your donations. Thank you for all your support!
