The incidence numbers continue to decline. The current figure is 12.2 new infections per 100,000 population. The government has extended the state of emergency for another 30 days. The latest decree states that the extension will take place on Friday April 1 "due to the serious circumstances that the coronavirus affects people's lives." This new regulation reiterates the permanent mask requirement. Without triple vaccination, it is no longer possible (at least theoretically) to enter public buildings.

Last week, Peru's Congress initiated impeachment proceedings against President Pedro Castillo for the second time. Yet he can only look back on an eight-month term in office. The final vote is scheduled for March 28. The opposition accuses Castillo of "moral incapacity," as it did most recently in December. Reasons include controversial promotions within the military, the alleged planned donation of a coastal strip to Bolivia and ties to lobbyist Karelim López. The government spokesman, from Perú Libre, sharply criticized the opposition, saying "such debates are a waste of time."
