the hometown of casayohana in the Peruvian Andes, was turned upside down for a while: At the end of last year, we still had plans to start building the urgently needed new therapy building as soon as possible. But just before Christmas, the uprisings in the country presented us with the great challenge of providing as much safety and emergency supplies as possible for our families and employees. We barely managed to get enough food - let alone building materials. We are grateful that the situation has stabilized and that we can now start thinking about the construction plans again. And every day we realize how necessary this step is! Why this is so, we would like to let 8-year-old Gregori tell you:
I live way up in the Andes - those are very big mountains in the middle of Peru. I love sweets and I think Spiderman is really cool. Actually, I’m not different from other kids. I laugh a lot, like to tease my mom and also Mami Bini. Unfortunately, there is one thing that makes me a little different from other children. I can’t walk very well because I have hemiplegia. For kids like me, life here is really hard. There are no doctors or therapists we can go to. And Lima is far away and expensive. Our parents don’t know how to help us, they are also ashamed and hide us at home. It’s often dark there and we are alone.
that it’s no longer like that for me, because I love being outside. Recently I’ve been able to romp around like a world champion. Mami Bini helped me with that. She founded a center here with us and brought in specialists. That’s why I can now walk and jump without falling. I’m even starting to play soccer, ride a bike, and race with my friends. Of course, word has spread about the progress I and the other children are making at casayohana. I notice that many families come to casayohana and also urgently need help. Unfortunately, we are bursting at the seams, as Bine always says so funnily! I wish that even more people can get help here and learn to live. That they can play and run with me. Life is fun when you are allowed to play.
so Bine translated his world into German. We can hardly put into words the feeling when children here at casayohana can come alive again. When they are simply allowed to be themselves and at the same time receive the therapeutic help they urgently need.
we need your support. Because Gregori is not alone in his fate. Children with disabilities in the high Andes have hardly any chance of survival. There are no therapies for them, often not even a proper diagnosis. Thanks to your valuable help, we have been able to and continue to give hope to so many families. But as our casayohana family grows, the work becomes more and more difficult for us. Every day we rearrange, use rooms for very different purposes, and occupy every corner of the two buildings on the casayohana campus. Yet there is still space here for a new house – and now once again the opportunity to start building.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank you. With your help, we have already laid part of the foundation for our new house. The foundation must be earthquake-proof so that the house can stand for decades and provide protection.
We now hope that, with your generosity, we will be able to gather the necessary cement and steel. We also want to start laying the first bricks on the foundation. Because every room that is newly built can be used by us immediately.
